Sleep Disorder Facts

1 out of 6 people you meet every day suffer from a sleep disorder. Most common are sleep related breathing disorders like sleep apnea, but movement disorders like restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder can be just as disruptive to your sleep.

Adults need 8 hours of sleep every night or they may exhibit symptoms related to sleep deprivation, while children and teenagers need even more. It is estimated that 28% of children currently diagnosed with ADD or ADHD have an undiagnosed sleep disorder.

What is Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a sleep related breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. This may happen as frequently as 20 or 30 times per hour or more while you sleep. Early recognition and treatment is critical as sleep disorders adversely affect your physical and mental health.

Left untreated, sleep disorders reduce your daytime productivity, increase your risk for accidents, and put you at risk for other illnesses. Personality changes, memory loss, reduced attention span, poor judgement and lethargy may indicate the presence of a sleep disorder.

Are You At Risk?

1 out of 3 people treating high blood pressure have undiagnosed sleep apnea. Research proves treating sleep apnea will lower both systolic and diastolic readings.

Untreated sleep related breathing disorders increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure & stroke.

Symptoms may include: Loud Snoring, General Fatigue, Irritability, Night Sweats, Morning Headaches, Personality Changes, Obesity, Poor Concentration or Memory Lapses.

If your snoring has kept others from getting a good night’s sleep, it is reason for concern. Consequences of untreated sleep apnea include; depression, weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, increased risk of stroke, among any other health related issues.
